Communion Practice

Holy Communion

Regarding the Christian unity expressed in the Lord’s Supper, Jesus says, “Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf” (1 Corinthians 10:17).

And yet, he urges care in practicing that unity. “Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord, eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1 Corinthians 11:27,29).

Our congregation applies these passages in observing the following practice for the celebration of Holy Communion:

Communicant members of Resurrection: Please announce for Holy Communion by signing the sheet on the stand on the stand in the narthex and see page 156 in the front of Christian Worship for help in examining yourself.

Visitors who are members of a congregation not in fellowship with ours: If you are not a member of a congregation in fellowship with ours, e.g. Wisconsin Ev. Lutheran Synod (WELS) or Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS), we respectfully ask that you refrain from receiving Holy Communion with us.

Visitors who belong to a congregation in fellowship with ours: Please announce for Holy Communion by speaking with the pastor before the worship service.
